2). Discuss Strong versus Valid Arguments in detail. Give an example of each from everyday life.
An argument is only valid when there is absolutely no way that the evidence of that argument could be true, while the conclusion of the argument could be false.
Valid Argument Example: Vegetables make people healthy because they contain a lot of vitamins and nutrients. Josh eats a lot of vegetables, therefore he is healthy.
Research has been done to prove that eating vegetables makes people healthier, which is why parents force kids to eat their vegetables. Since Josh eats vegetables, he has to be healthy because vegetables make people healthy.
A strong argument is when the evidence of the argument is true, but there a possibility however big or small that the conclusion of the argument could be false.
Strong Argument Example: In the United States of America, the legal age for drinking is 21, therefore no one under 21 drinks.
This is only a strong argument opposed to a valid argument because there are definitely people under the age of 21 who drink. The evidence of the argument is very true, but the conclusion at least from my observation is false.
I've been following your blog these past few days and I'd like to tell you that you do a great job of explaining these different concepts! You make it easy to follow and easy to understand. Valid arguments and strong are similar and you did a great job at explaining the different. A valid argument needs to be able to have a reasonable outcome, whether or not it is true. As far as your example for a strong argument goes, your example was great! That was a great way to explain the concept of what a strong argument means, the evidence must be true but the conclusion does not necessarily have to be 100% true. Overall, great job on your post. I’ll be sure to follow all of your postings!
ReplyDeleteWell done! Your explanation of what a strong argument and a valid argument are explained in your own words very well. Your example was very helpful in understanding what a valid argument is. Your explanation for why it is valid is also helpful and proves how your valid statement is correct. Your strong argument is also great and made me laugh. It’s a great concept and it’s great you thought of it! As you explained it is a strong statement but people under the age of 21 may still drink making it invalid. Both of your examples were very helpful.
ReplyDeleteI really like the way you describe things. I think that your examples and the way you described this post was great! Your post made it easier for me to understand what a valid and strong argument were. Your example for a strong argument was a really good example. It is true that being over 21 you are legally able to drink, but it is false that if you are under 21 your not going to drink because there are so many people under 21 who still drink. Overall, great job!!
